The U. S. is now a net exporter of Natural Gas

By Andy May

The Wall Street Journal reported today that the United States is now a net exporter of natural gas. We exported an average of 7.4 billion cubic feet (BCF) of gas a day in November, more than the 7 BCF/day we imported. The last time the country did this was 60 years ago, a graph of exports and imports is shown in figure 1.

Shipments from Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass LNG facility have grown to 1.5 BCF/day and they continue to add capacity to the terminal. Gas exports have grown more than 50% since 2010 and are likely to increase further by 2020 according to Citigroup and the U.S Department of Energy.
